Waffles!

What would you eat at the Bourgeois Pig? Well brunch of course. What does every brunch need? Waffles of course. I would argue coffee is a necessity too but Kelley had to go and get her chai so that kind of messes it up.

Anyways I had a waffle with nutella and bananas and Kelley’s had nutella too (because we are smart ladies) plus strawberries. My small latte ended up being a giant mug of warm coffee comfort so it was the perfect morning meal.

Fabulousity

This post is all about the posh Chicago lifestyle we all wish we had. You know the life where we go to bars on the 96th floor of buildings and sip on $12 martinis. For one night we were that fabulous (well until we went and devoured some deep dish pizza and we became part of the uncivilized masses again).

We heard that the top of Hancock tower had the best view of the city but it cost $35, on the other hand the lounge that was extremely close to the top was “free” except for the drinks. Although they were rather pricey it was worth it for a third of the price with the same view, better ambiance, and tasty drinks. I was in love with my drink, a zen martini. It was some magical mix of apple sake, something lemony, and ginger. Of course all of us ordered fancy drinks and luckily are close enough that we didn’t mind passing them around. Mine was my favorite except for maybe Andrea’s, which was some sort of sweet passion fruit with a hint of tart orange.

This was only the beginning of course; posh people go for drinks before dinner and the rest of the night’s festivities. A great start to the night with even better people.

Road Trip Classics

This past weekend I had the most amazing time visiting Chicago!! Unfortunately my flight was canceled (boo) but fortunately my friends were driving up and I hitched a ride with them (yay!). Now anyone who has been on a car trip with me knows that we will be eating at McDonalds. There is no room for other suggestions, McDonalds is going to happen.

Another classic stop is Starbucks. Can never go wrong with a coffee break. Sadly I lost my voice on this whole trip for no apparent reason, so actually this was a tea break.

More Chicago eats to come!

Weekend treats

So I had a four day weekend and treated myself to some tasty food. First I went out to eat Indian food which I never do because it is too expensive for a college student but when I become rich and famous you know where I'll be eating. Usually I eat chicken tikka masala but I decided to try something new and had chicken mango wala. It was better than I had expected, its not too sweet just a little to balance out the spice. Then the next day for coffee time I had a ginger snap and iced latte. I love a ginger cookie and its perfect for the start of fall. Well its perfect for this whole season, gingerbread cookies are my favorite for Christmas. Lastly our cocktails, beer, peach martini and my long island iced tea.

Go to meals

Everyone has their go to meals they make when cooking is just not worth the effort or thought. It is no surprise that tortillas are my go to staple in the kitchen. I literally feel lost if there are none in the kitchen. Some people run to the store the second they run out of milk, I go for my tortillas. Well this is my little variation, chicken fajita "quesadilla." I put quesadilla in quotes because it really has barely any cheese but I don't know what else to call it, maybe a tortilla panini?? Anyways I sauteed onions and peppers with a little paprika and cumin and added some precooked chicken I had in the fridge. Then added it to a tortilla with beans and a tiny bit of cheese and crisped it up in a pan. That was it. Simple, easy, satisfying.

Now for my go to breakfast. This one is a new development for this year. I used to only have yogurt but that got boring fast and a bowl of cereal doesn't do it for me either so now on to oatmeal. I struggled at the beginning to make it actually taste good and not like a bowl of paste but I have developed my own little technique for the perfect bowl of oatmeal. First I cut up half an apple into tiny pieces (yes it has to be tiny so you have apple bits in every spoonful), then you add close to half a cup of oatmeal. Now for the good stuff, add a lot of cinnamon (I tried to add nutmeg and ginger but it didn't make it better or make much of a difference), a spoonful of brown sugar, and a tad bit more than half a teaspoon of vanilla extract. The extract is the secret weapon, it turns it from mush to soul warming goodness. Finally top it off with milk (never water, its like hot chocolate, why would you use water instead of milk??) and microwave for 2 minutes. Enjoy with a warm, strong cup off coffee and seize the day!

Sick Day

I realize this isn't the most exciting food post ever but I was going through a little blog withdrawal so it was necessary.
Anyways I was a tad sick today and Andrea wanted to come over and discuss life plans so it was a perfect night for some spicy chicken soup. Kinda just threw vegetables (onions, peppers, corn) in a pots with some chicken stock, crushed tomatoes, chicken, and rice. Obviously wasn't in the mood for an epic cooking endeavor so this was easy enough. For dessert I had some apple sauce cupcakes with brown sugar cream cheese frosting. Because really even if I am sick, I'm not going to turn down a cupcake.
